I saw this banner on the Ufone website announcing the launch of Blackberry Z10 and decided to call their helpline. The handset was available in the grey market between PKR 65,000 to 75,000. Ufone has thrown in the best price yet, launching it for PKR 60,000 with official Blackberry Warranty.
Further to my own investigation, we received the following Press Release from Ufone regarding the Blackberry Z10:
According to news confirmed by the Abu Dhabi Group itself, Asia’s largest telecom operator – SingTel – has decided to sell its 30% stake in Warid Telecom after a “Strategic Review” of the company. Abu Dhabi Group is the buyer that has re-acquired 100% holding of Warid Telecom after purchase of the 30% stake for USD 150 million.
In 2007, SingTel had bought a stake in Warid for USD 758 million describing its decision to invest in Warid as a “natural fit” following its investments in India and Bangladesh as well.
As evident above, SingTel has sold off its stake at a significant loss.

On July 17 last year, Wateen laid off more than 20% of its work-force, sending shivers down the spine of every employee. There were questions asked about the stability of the organization and how long it would last. Wateen also responded to our story, which may be read here.
Well, it appears as if CEO Naeem Zamindar had planned things well. We have received an email the CEO has sent us to all Wateen Telecom employee’s which mentions of a proposal submitted to Board of Governors to announce a bonus plan for all employees.
Following is the text of the email, as shared with us by Wateen’s PR agency:
We have worked very hard to stabilize Wateen over the last year. We’ve seen many of our friends move on after the restructuring. The structural change in business – the Line of Business model – has brought in a great many efficiencies in the business. Culturally, we’ve gone from being a closed and dictatorial culture to a much more open, relaxed and dynamic company where people now speak up, ask questions and expect answers. The fire that destroyed our head office was a huge setback but we have bounced back and continued to make progress. We’ve achieved significant progress by reducing our costs and improving our margins. Our LDI business has moved up to number 2 in the country and overall the company is on its way to becoming more stable.

Looks like the race for capturing and attracting Blackberry customers is on! After Ufone introduced low cost BlackBerry Internet service packages back in March (earlier this year), Warid has sprung a surprise for its customers as well.
The packages are priced the same as ufone, that is, starting from Rs. 350 per month.
